Mac introduces the theme, “Lord of the Harvest,” from Matthew 9, Colossians 1, and 2 Timothy 4. Together, these passages reveal the Lord’s compassion for people who are weary and lost, his desire for believers to walk worthily and bear fruit, and his charge to preach the Word and be ready in every circumstance. These are connected by God’s purpose: to form a people who manifest Christ’s life and are prepared for his return.
Mac emphasizes that biblical compassion is active: it means recognizing another’s suffering and coming alongside to help. The Lord Jesus is the Good Shepherd, the Bread of Life, the Resurrection and the Life, and the Light of the world. His works of compassion reveal who he is and bring people to himself. Believers are called to show this same care—not merely to sympathize or meet outward needs, but to walk with others through hardship and point them to Christ.
Walking worthily does not come from human effort or self-improvement. Christ alone lived fully pleasing to God; now God works in believers, enabling them to will and do what pleases him. As they yield to the Holy Spirit, his life is increasingly expressed through them. This includes bearing fruit, growing in the knowledge of God, and patiently serving one another.
Mac explains that readiness is a daily response, whether circumstances are favorable or difficult. By abiding in God’s Word and presence, believers are prepared to serve and speak when opportunities arise. With the Lord’s purpose in view, they can patiently bear with one another and co-labor as shepherds in the harvest, showing the world God’s compassion as they await Christ’s return.

Patiently co-labor with others as the church awaits the Lord’s return.
36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
