In our recent fellowship on the book of Proverbs, we have been exploring the seven pillars that represent the character of the Lord Jesus, which He desires to build in us as part of His church. So far, we have discussed righteousness, diligence, and love, and today we focus on the fourth pillar: lowliness or humility. The essence of lowliness is to think little of oneself and to avoid pride, which is the root of many sins. The Bible teaches that pride leads to contention and destruction, while humility brings wisdom and honor. Jesus exemplified lowliness, demonstrating that true strength lies in humility. Our natural disposition is often prideful, but through the Holy Spirit, we can learn to embrace lowliness. This involves recognizing our need for God and allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal our true selves. Additionally, God may arrange circumstances that humble us, as humility is essential for spiritual growth. Ultimately, lowliness is not merely an action but a character trait that reflects Christ's nature within us. We are encouraged to seek this transformation, allowing God to build His character in us.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.
5 Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
25 The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.
29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.
10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
1 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
4 An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.
24 Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.
4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.
23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
