In this message, John reflects on King David's significant experiences leading to the preparation of the temple, God's house. He highlights David's sin of numbering Israel, which displeased God and resulted in severe consequences. David's heartfelt repentance and humility are emphasized, showcasing his concern for the people over himself. This led him to the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, where he built an altar and offered sacrifices, marking the designated site for the temple. John notes the differences between the temple and the tabernacle, emphasizing the temple's permanence, grandeur, and the inclusion of both God and man. David's extensive preparations for the temple, including gathering materials and organizing personnel, demonstrate his deep affection and commitment to God's house. John encourages the audience to reflect on their own affections for God's house, drawing parallels between David's life and their own spiritual journeys. He concludes by urging the congregation to aspire to be mature sons of God, actively participating in the building of His house, and to recognize the glorified Christ as the ultimate pattern for God's dwelling.
1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
7 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel. 8 And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
17 And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
